Lady Bird Johnson Southern Magnolia

Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson was born in Karnack , Texas and married future president, Lyndon Baines Johnson, in 1934. During her White House years, Mrs. Johnson served as honorary chairman of the National Head Start Program, and began many environmental projects, her life long passion. While in residence at the White House, Lady Bird propagated a tree from the Southern Magnolia planted by Andrew Jackson in 1828 and took it to her home in Texas . The Lady Bird Johnson Southern Magnolia is a specimen tree that links her love of nature to her love of nation.
